Hyundai earns No.1 position among world’s non-premium brands in J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Initial Quality Study
JD. Power’s Initial Quality Study serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership. The study is used extensively by manufacturers worldwide to help them design and build better vehicles and by consumers to help them in their vehicle purchase decisions and Hyundai has emerged as an industry leader..
Initial quality has been shown over the years to be an excellent predictor of long-term durability, which can significantly impact consumer purchase decisions. The study captures problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories—design-related problems and defects and malfunctions - across all of the world’s vehicle makers.
In overall nameplate rankings, Hyundai improved from 13th rank position in 2008 to fourth in 2009 in the Industry – keeping good company with Lexus, Porsche, Cadillac and Honda, rounding out the top five. This makes Hyundai the fastest moving motor vehicle brand in the world.
“Achieving high levels of initial quality in all-new models is one of the greatest challenges for manufacturers,” said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. “Now that more manufacturers are getting their launch quality right straight out of the gate, consumers can expect the quality of new vehicles to continue to rise.”
Hyundai’s improvement is driven entirely by design and quality performance (as opposed to model mix change), with Elantra taking a position in the Top 10 Industry Leading Models for Initial Quality, and winning the Compact Car Segment, while Accent ranked #2 in the Sub-Compact Car Segment.
With high quality generally translating into reduced running and maintenance expenses during a vehicle’s life cycle, Hyundai’s continued reputation for quality and reliability make their vehicles the ideal choice for PNG conditions - in both light commercial and passenger vehicles.
